This year has been a roller coaster ride for the Nui Ukulele Club, and
we are still chugging along. We had nice contribution from the Bill
Pollack Music, and we are continuing to work towards our non-profit
status.

I am happy to announce we are now past the first phase of the Nui
Ukulele Program. We have gathered most of the learning materials and
methods we want to use in our school program. We are charging into Phase
Two. Phase Two will be to develop, test and practice the techniques and
methods for ukulele instruction. I am still looking for some intuitive
more complete music notation that does not violate regular common music
notation. Some basic elements of our program will include solfege,
Kodaly method, Seth Riggs methods, chord progression based on harmonized
major scales, and common music notation. The music notation / tablature
will be worked out by the end of the month. If anyone has any easy
inventive methods of notating music, please email me at
nuiukulele@pobox.com.

Carving out a place for yourself.

The next major discussion regarding practice is carving out a place for
yourself in a given day. This idea goes hand-and-hand with establishing
a routine for yourself. Carving out a place for yourself is both mental
and physical. You need to setup a physical time and place where you can
play the ukulele, and not be bothered by outside influences. Once you
have setup a chair and a music stand in a quiet place where you can
practice, you need to clear your mind of the yesterday’s events, today
and tomorrow’s events, and focus what you are doing NOW. If you can
give you best most focused effort of ukulele practice for 20 minutes,
your ukulele skills will progress dramatically in a very short time.

The effort of learning music is in your persistence. Forget mystique.
This is about YOUR music. Great music is not for the faint of heart. You
must be imaginative, and strong hearted. You must try things that might
not work. And you must not let anyone define you limits because of where
you come from. YOUR only limit is your soul. What I say is true, anyone
can play the ukulele, but only the patient, persistent, and focused can
be great.

Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind,
flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to
everything. -- Plato
