Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes
through continuous struggle. And so we must straighten our backs and
work for our freedom. A person can't ride you unless your back is bent.

Happy New Year! I am gearing up for a big year for the
Nui Ukulele Club. I have a lot of materials and activities planned for
the coming year. I have revamped my Nui Ukulele Program. I will be
doing more hands-on instruction this year with more focus on reinforcing
the fundamentals through practice, and less of an academic approach. I
have learned a great deal and gotten some great feedback from the week
long Molokai Ukulele Workshop on teaching methods and classroom
practicum. I have updated the 2008 meeting schedule on the
nuiukulele.org web site. We will be meeting almost every Tuesday from
6:30 PM to 8:30 PM until June at the Sheridan Park Field house 2nd
Floor.
We will have NO meeting on Tuesday, January 22 at Sheridan Park due to
park administration problems. We will have a meeting the following
Tuesday on January 29. Please call 312-491-9928 and leave your phone
number, if you need more info.
We have had a very successful year. This last December I was able to
attend the week long Molokai Ukulele Workshop sponsored by the Pacific
Music Foundation and Kimo Hussey. The instruction and atmosphere was
fabulous. This was a grand experience for all people involved. We all
had the most wonderful time sharing our love and appreciation of ukulele
music. The most difficult problem was adjusting back to our regular
lives after the workshop was over. The aloha spirit was the highest
ever, and everyone was helping each other. I learned more in 5 days
than I have learned in three years of formal music instruction.
On the week back, we had a wonderful Christmas Party on Tuesday. Ukulele
people from all around the Chicagoland area came and enjoyed a pleasant
but short evening of food and uke music. My friend and French Chef,
Delano Crawford prepared the meal. People were in awe of the food, and
could not stop raving about it.
On Thursday, I got the opportunity to play Santa for some 40 plus
pre-school children. I had them in a frenzy with the ukulele music,
dancing with their fathers, and the big group hugs, and cheering. Then
the pre-schoolers formed a small mosh pit, and started chanting,
“Presents! Presents! Presents!” We all about died laughing. Disaster
was averted and the presents were handed out.
On Friday, we got to play for the Boys and Girls Club in Pilsen. There
were about 70-80 young kids that were there, and we did a huge sing
along to “Rudolf the Red-Nose Reindeer” and “Jingle Bells”, and then we
got to introduce the man of the season, the BIG RED guy, the one and
only, SANTA CLAUS!!!! Yes, there was plenty to cheer about, and many
happy smiling Christmas faces.
LEARNING CORNER
To help identify intervals, I have came up with a chart. Intervals make
up chords, and help us understand melody relationships. Intervals also
help us learn how music moves from one pitch to another.
